Weinberge Jena

Life is too short to drink bad wine …

… as Goethe is reputed to have said. Among his many other claims to fame, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was also a renowned wine lover and connoisseur. A number of his poems idealise and pay homage to fine wines, but he never loses his sober and realistic perspective.

The history of viticulture in Jena dates back to the 12th century. Documents show just how much wine was produced here in the past. Then as now, Jena offered good winegrowing conditions, with mild temperatures throughout the year and a sheltered location among the limestone hills. Today, wine is grown in Jena in the Käuzchenberg vineyard in Zwätzen, at Grafenberg vineyard and at the foot of Jenzig hill. The favoured grape varieties include müller-thurgau, pinot blanc and riesling.

A visit to one of Jena’s beer gardens is pretty much mandatory when the weather is fine. More discerning beer enthusiasts are also well provided for, as Jena boasts a long brewing tradition. To sample the current local varieties, head for the Papiermühle brewpub.
