Jena prides itself on being a family-friendly city. And with good reason: more than 13,000 children and young people under the age of 18 live here. Visitors and newcomers to the city are often surprised by the sheer variety of family-friendly activities on offer.

Jena prides itself on being family-friendly

There are play areas and parks where children can run around and let off steam, local youth centres, child-friendly leisure activities, comprehensive childcare facilities and a variety of different schools. Word has obviously got around: Jena has the highest birth rate of any town or city in Thuringia!

As well as the designated walking trails for children, where they can get up close to nature, there are many events and activities specifically aimed at younger visitors at the Zeiss Planetarium, Imaginata and the museums in Jena. Last but not least, there are special events for families and children at the Volksbad arts centre, concerts for children and babies by the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, and the ‘children’s arena’ at the Kulturarena festival.
